An Unlikely Day

We decided to go for one of our usual urban hikes along Griggs reservoir on a recent gray, misty, sometimes rainy, spring day that central Ohio is famous for. A day you can’t help but feeling that you won’t to see much. Once down along the reservoir we began our search for plants and critters of interest which we punctuate with the usual trash pick-up.

It turns out that such a day is great for photographing wildflowers and my wife took full advantage. The quite solitude of the day also brought the Baltimore Orioles out of the tree tops and they, along with a pair of Blue Birds, were a delight to see.

Finally there are pictures that transcend the subject and truly capture our love of the nature. The image below is such a picture. It was taken by my wife on a recent paddle on the reservoir.

Very Large Ant Mounds and Celandine Poppies

Recently while hiking at Battelle Darby we noticed numerous very large ant mounds. What was going on? A guess would be that the large amount of rain recently had forced the ants above ground as they rebuilt their nests.

We were also excited to find two wild flowers that were new to us, the Celandine Poppy and Golden Seal, both of which were quite lovely.

As we continued our hike an old abandoned truck appeared contrasting with the new growth of the surrounding woods.

Finally a Wood Thrush entertained us for quite a while as we paused to listen.

Remember to double click on the pics if you want a better look.

Warblers and Wildflowers

Spring has finally started to live up to its name. Recently we’ve been hiking Battelle Darby and paddling O’Shaughnessy Reservoir. Along with the many different wildflowers we’ve also seen Yellow-rumped, and Black & White Warblers and enjoyed the recently arrived Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. Today, while paddling back to our launch site, a Bald Eagle soared overhead.
